Ever heard of a place so mesmerizing that it looks straight out of a fantasy movie? Welcome to Hinatuan Enchanted River in Surigao del Sur—a river so clear and blue that it almost doesn’t seem real. Hidden in a lush forest, this mystical body of water has captured the hearts of travellers with its unreal beauty and even more unreal stories.

The name isn’t just for show—locals believe this river is protected by engkantos (supernatural beings), fairies, and spirits. Some even say that its waters are enchanted, which is why it stays impossibly clean and blue. Others believe it’s a portal to a different world (cue the fantasy movie soundtrack). While science tells us that the water’s vibrant hues come from the mix of minerals and the river’s depth, the myths surrounding it make a visit even more exciting.

What makes Enchanted River truly breathtaking is its crystal-clear blue water. Depending on the time of day and how the sunlight hits, the river shifts between shades of sapphire, turquoise, and aquamarine. It’s the kind of place that looks so good in photos that people might think you edited them—until they see it for themselves.
The water is so transparent that you can see schools of fish swimming gracefully below. But here’s the twist: no one is allowed to catch or eat them. They’re part of the magic, and they mysteriously disappear into the depths whenever people try to chase them. Talk about a real-life enchanted experience!

Want to know something mind-blowing? No one actually knows how deep Enchanted River really is. Divers have explored underwater caves and tunnels beneath the river, but many parts remain uncharted. Some locals claim it has no bottom, which adds to its eerie yet exciting appeal. One thing’s for sure—it’s not your ordinary swimming hole.

If you visit at exactly 12 noon, prepare for something magical. The staff clears the river of swimmers, and as a folk song starts playing, a swarm of large fish appears from the depths. It’s as if they’re responding to a mysterious call. The feeding frenzy lasts a few minutes, then the fish vanish again into the unknown. It’s a must-see moment that makes you wonder: do these fish have their own secret hideout down there?
