If you're a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or just someone who enjoys exploring beautiful old churches, then there’s exciting news for you! The stunning St. Gregory the Great Parish Church in Majayjay, Laguna has just been designated as a Minor Basilica by none other than Pope Francis himself. And honestly, it’s about time this architectural gem got the recognition it deserves!
Tucked away in the quiet town of Majayjay, this church has been standing tall since 1576-yes, that’s almost 450 years of history! While the current structure was completed between 1616 and 1649, it has gone through its fair share of challenges, including fires and natural disasters. Despite these trials, it remains one of the most breathtaking heritage churches in the Philippines, complete with its baroque-style façade, intricate interiors, and an old-world charm that transports visitors back in time.

If you’ve never been, imagine walking through its massive wooden doors and stepping onto centuries-old stone floors, with grand arches towering above you. The air inside is filled with the scent of aged wood and candle wax, adding to its sacred ambience. Every inch of this church tells a story, making it no surprise that it has been recognised by the National Museum of the Philippines as a National Cultural Treasure.
Now, if you're wondering what makes a Minor Basilica different from other churches, here’s a quick breakdown. The title is granted by the Vatican to churches that stand out for their historical, cultural, and spiritual significance. According to the 1989 Vatican document “Domus ecclesiae”, a Minor Basilica must serve as a centre of active worship and be an example of proper liturgical celebrations and devotions.

In short, it’s a really big deal! It means that Majayjay Church is now part of an elite group of Catholic churches worldwide, gaining the privilege of hosting special liturgical celebrations and welcoming more pilgrims and visitors.
The designation of St. Gregory the Great Parish Church as a Minor Basilica is also a momentous occasion for the Diocese of San Pablo, which submitted the petition to the Vatican in December 2024. The official decree was issued on 25 January 2025, marking a historic first for Laguna- this is the province’s very first Minor Basilica!
Bishop Marcelino Antonio Maralit Jr., who leads the Diocese of San Pablo, described this recognition as a “wonderful blessing”, particularly as it coincides with the Jubilee Year of Hope. He also emphasised the importance of continuing the church’s mission to spread the Good News and serve as a beacon of God’s love and mercy.
