Shibuya’s NYE Countdown Cancelled: Celebrate 2025 in These Exciting Spots Instead

If you were planning to ring in the new year at Shibuya’s iconic Scramble Crossing, it’s time to rethink your plans. Shibuya Ward has officially announced the cancellation of its 2025 New Year’s Eve countdown, citing safety concerns over large gatherings. This decision is part of the ward’s ongoing efforts to discourage unruly crowds, which also include a year-round public drinking ban and restrictions during Halloween.

Shibuya’s NYE Countdown Cancelled

Shibuya first started its New Year’s Eve celebrations in 2016, attracting massive crowds. By 2018, the event had drawn a record 120,000 revellers to the world-famous crossing. However, festivities were paused in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and have not resumed since, with local officials maintaining that such events pose significant safety risks.

While Shibuya’s absence may leave some disappointed, other vibrant destinations across Japan offer equally exciting ways to welcome the new year.
