Have you ever dreamt of breezing through Metro Manila traffic? Well, your dream might just become a reality! The Philippine government, along with San Miguel Corporation (SMC), is tackling the notorious congestion problem head-on with the construction of two brand new expressways: the Northern Access Link Expressway (NALEX) and the Southern Access Link Expressway (SALEX). The NALEX-SALEX construction promises to revolutionise travel in and around the capital, offering a smoother and faster connection for both locals and tourists.

If you've ever gotten stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, especially on EDSA or SLEX, you'll be thrilled to hear about this news. The Philippine government has announced the construction of two brand new expressways aimed at easing traffic congestion and making travel in and around the capital a breeze.
NALEX is set to begin construction by the fourth quarter of 2024 and should be operational by 2026. This ambitious two-phase project will connect Skyway Stage 3 in Balintawak to Central Luzon, with the first phase reaching the New Manila International Airport (NMIA) upon completion. Phase two, subject to future demand, could extend further to Tarlac City.
More than just easing traffic flow, NALEX is expected to be a boon for the coastal towns of Pampanga, like Masantol and Macabebe. These areas, known for their fishing industry, are expected to benefit greatly from improved road access. Easier movement of goods will likely lead to a flourishing local economy.
Travellers coming from the south will be happy to know about SALEX. Construction for this 40.65-kilometer elevated expressway network is slated to begin in early 2025. The final engineering design is currently being finalised. SALEX incorporates the existing Shoreline Expressway and will connect Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) with the upcoming NMIA through three extensions of Skyway Stage 3. Once completed, SALEX is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on major thoroughfares like EDSA and SLEX.
These new expressways are part of a larger initiative by San Miguel Corporation (SMC) to enhance the expressway network in the Greater Capital Region. With NALEX aiming for completion by 2026, travellers can expect a smoother and faster journey to and from Metro Manila in the coming years.
