Looking for a place that feels totally off-grid—but in a magical, “can't believe this is in the Philippines” kind of way? Balabac Island is exactly that. Tucked away at the southernmost tip of Palawan, this island group is what travel dreams are made of: powdery white-sand beaches, surreal turquoise waters, and an untouched vibe that makes it feel like your own private paradise.

Balabac is a remote municipality made up of 36 islands and islets, located just above Sabah, Malaysia. It’s the last frontier of Palawan and takes a bit more effort to reach—but that’s part of what keeps it so pristine. Think of it as the Maldives of the Philippines, but far more affordable and way less crowded.

Here’s what makes Balabac stand out:
1. Onok Island
The crown jewel of Balabac. This island has an overwater boardwalk, blindingly white sandbars, and water so clear you’ll forget you're still in the Philippines. Snorkelling here feels like diving into an aquarium.
2. Mansalangan Sandbar
Only appears during low tide, which makes it even more special. It stretches across the sea like a floating runway—perfect for that drone shot flex.
3. Candaraman Island
Known for its slightly pinkish sand and calm vibe. You can also camp here overnight under a sky full of stars.
Fancy some history? This Spanish-era lighthouse has been standing since 1892. It’s a bit of a climb but the panoramic view is totally worth it.

Balabac isn’t just about beaches—it’s a biodiversity hotspot. It’s home to dugongs, sea turtles, the elusive Philippine mouse-deer (Pilandok), and rare birds like the Philippine cockatoo and Palawan hornbill. If you’re into wildlife, you’ll be blown away.

Getting to Balabac is part of the adventure. Here’s the simplest route:
Fly to Puerto Princesa, Palawan.
Take a van or bus to Rio Tuba (6–7 hours).
Ride a boat to Balabac (2–4 hours, depending on sea conditions).
Some islands may require chartered boats or inclusion in tour packages—so booking a guided tour is often the smartest move.

No luxury resorts here—just the basics. Some guesthouses offer simple rooms, while most travellers go for island-hopping tours with camping setups, hammocks, or cottages included. It’s all about embracing the remote-island experience.

The ideal time to go is March to May, during the dry season. Avoid the rainy months (June to November), as boat trips may get cancelled due to rough seas.

Signal and electricity are limited, so it’s a great chance to unplug.
Bring cash—ATMs are non-existent in the area.
Pack eco-friendly sunscreen, and please don’t leave rubbish behind. Balabac’s beauty deserves to be protected.
Most tours are multi-day trips, so plan accordingly.
