A recent survey by Global Rescue has uncovered intriguing differences in travel preferences between men and women, shedding light on how gender influences destination choices. According to the Global Rescue Summer 2024 Traveler Sentiment and Safety Survey, the world of travel is not as uniform as one might think. The survey reveals that while both men and women value scenic beauty and adventure, their priorities often diverge significantly.

For women, stunning natural landscapes are the top priority when selecting travel destinations. The survey found that 37% of female respondents place a high emphasis on visiting destinations with breathtaking views such as mountains, jungles, and glaciers. This appreciation for natural beauty is accompanied by a strong interest in cultural experiences, with 15% of women highlighting the importance of engaging with local languages, customs, and traditions. For these travellers, authentic and immersive experiences are key to their journey.
In contrast, men are more inclined towards adventure and adrenaline-pumping activities. 37% of male respondents prioritise destinations that offer thrilling experiences like scuba diving, skiing, and trekking. While men also appreciate scenic landscapes, with 33% citing it as a significant factor in their travel plans, they tend to be less focused on cultural elements. Only 10% of men consider cultural diversity crucial when making travel decisions.
The survey also highlights notable differences in dream destinations. Female travellers show a strong interest in visiting places such as Antarctica, New Zealand, Iceland, the Galapagos Islands, and Egypt. These destinations offer a mix of stunning landscapes and unique cultural experiences. On the other hand, men are drawn to destinations like Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Patagonia, Mongolia, and various parts of Africa, which are known for their adventurous appeal and natural wonders.
Dan Richards, CEO of Global Rescue, underscores the importance of these findings. “Understanding the preferences of travellers is essential for the travel industry,” Richards notes. “While women tend to favour beautiful landscapes and cultural experiences, men are more inclined towards adventure. This insight allows travel providers to tailor their offerings to better meet the diverse needs of their clientele.”

The survey results also suggest that as more women engage in adventure sports and explore remote destinations, we may see a shift in these preferences over time. For now, the distinct travel priorities of men and women offer valuable insights for both travellers and those in the travel industry, paving the way for more personalised and satisfying travel experiences.
