As the holiday season approaches, Grab is gearing up to enhance its services by adding 10,000 new cars to its fleet. This significant expansion aims to address the expected surge in demand, with usage levels potentially reaching three to four times higher than normal. Grab's Country Head for the Philippines, Ronald Roda, announced that the first 5,000 vehicles are already being deployed, and an additional 5,000 could follow in the coming months if demand continues to climb.

This strategic move is part of Grab's efforts to return to its pre-pandemic fleet size of 65,000 vehicles. As of April, there were 23,000 transport network vehicle service (TNVS) units operating on the roads, with Grab being the primary provider of four-wheel transport in the Philippines. Roda emphasised the growing reliance on Grab, stating, “Every year, the expectation increases because people are more and more reliant on us.”
With the anticipated increase in demand, many riders may be concerned about potential fare hikes. However, Roda reassured customers that higher demand does not necessarily equate to higher prices. Grab is focusing on initiatives designed to help maintain affordability, such as GrabCar Saver, which offers lower fares in exchange for longer wait times, and the Share With Friends feature, allowing passengers to split rides with others heading in the same direction.
Despite this commitment to affordability, Grab has faced scrutiny regarding its surge pricing practices. The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) reported that surge charges are often included in fares without clear transparency. Roda addressed these concerns, explaining that Grab's pricing operates dynamically, adjusting in real-time to reflect market conditions through an algorithm rather than manual settings.
As Grab works to bolster its fleet and navigate the complexities of holiday demand, the company's initiatives highlight a commitment to improving the user experience while balancing the needs of its drivers and passengers. With the increase in vehicles and a focus on affordability, Grab aims to make holiday travel smoother for its customers.
