The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently announced the closure of Mount Apo Natural Park (MANP) from Jun 1–Aug 31 2024. This annual closure serves a crucial purpose — to allow the mountain and its diverse ecosystem time to recover from the impact of tourist activity.
During this period, all trekking and camping activities within MANP will be prohibited. This temporary pause gives wildlife a chance to roam freely and the natural environment a chance to regenerate. With its rich biodiversity, Mount Apo is home to countless species, including the critically endangered Philippine Eagle. By limiting human presence, the closure helps ensure the continued health of this vital habitat.
The closure of Mount Apo isn’t a new practice. Since 2022, the park authorities have implemented this seasonal restriction to promote long-term sustainability. It’s a testament to their commitment to balancing tourism with environmental protection.
If you were dreaming of conquering Mount Apo this summer, you’ll need to adjust your plans. The park will reopen in September, welcoming hikers once again. In the meantime, you can explore other breathtaking hiking destinations in the Philippines.
