The Philippines continues to make waves on the global tourism stage! Siargao is celebrated for its pristine surfing spots, with Lonely Planet highlighting it as a tropical paradise known for the “Cloud 9 break,” which is regarded as one of the best waves in the world. This recognition cements Siargao’s status as a must-visit destination for surfers and beach lovers alike.
But surfing is just one of the many attractions Siargao offers. Lonely Planet also highlighted various activities that tourists can enjoy on the island. Visitors can take surfing lessons, embark on island-hopping adventures, explore hidden caves, and enjoy live music performances in the island’s bars and cafes. The vibrant local culture adds another layer of charm to this already enchanting destination.
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco expressed her delight over the recognition, emphasising the growing global appreciation for the Philippines’ diverse landscapes, rich culture, and welcoming community. “Siargao is a destination that balances adventure and excitement with tranquillity and sustainability, catering to all types of travellers,” Frasco said in a statement. “The acknowledgement given to Siargao is a victory for the island and its people and a proud moment for the entire country.”
Frasco also reiterated the commitment of the Marcos administration to transform the Philippines into a tourism powerhouse through the promotion of sustainable tourism and the preservation of the country’s natural wonders. This dedication to sustainability ensures that Siargao will continue to be a pristine paradise for future generations of travellers.
Lonely Planet’s list of top Southeast Asian destinations also includes other remarkable places such as the coastal area of Amed in Bali, Indonesia; Cao Bang in northern Vietnam; the vibrant nature reserve of Khao Sok National Park in Thailand; Luang Prabang, the former royal capital of Laos; the tropical island of Penang in Malaysia; and Gili Air, one of the islets in the Gili Islands, Indonesia.
