When it comes to travel, iconic landmarks are always a must-see, but there’s something extra special about stumbling upon a local neighbourhood that embodies the soul of a city. Time Out’s annual ranking of the world’s "coolest" neighbourhoods for 2024 is here, and it highlights off-the-beaten-path areas where culture, community, and local flavour thrive. These neighbourhoods offer a genuine slice of local life, making them ideal for travellers looking to explore beyond the usual tourist spots.

Time Out’s editors and writers from across the globe selected these vibrant areas based on their unique culture, nightlife, food, drink, and community spirit. The list focuses on neighbourhoods that might not be the most famous but are definitely worth a visit. These are places where visitors can experience the true essence of the city, with authentic local experiences, and an undeniable charm.
Topping the list is Notre-Dame du Mont in Marseille, France, a neighbourhood brimming with street art, lively nightlife, and a strong sense of community. Local business owners, like those at the popular eatery Razzia, describe the area as one where “everyone knows and helps each other.” Bookstore Histoire de l’œil and restaurant Caterine are other standout spots in this evolving neighbourhood, which continues to attract both locals and visitors with its cultural diversity and artistic atmosphere.
Coming in at number two is Mers Sultan in Casablanca, Morocco, celebrated for its artistic authenticity and local vibe. Unlike more touristy areas, Mers Sultan offers a glimpse into real Casablanca life, untouched by trendy establishments. Pererenan in Bali, Indonesia, ranks third, thanks to its pristine beaches, cosy cafes, and a laid-back atmosphere that feels miles away from the island’s busier areas.
In the U.S., Kerns in Portland, Oregon leads the way, ranked fourth on the list, praised for its small-town charm within a city. Meanwhile, the Afro-Caribbean influences of Stokes Croft and St Paul’s in Bristol, UK, land it in sixth place, with its thriving thrift stores and cultural diversity.
