Incheon International Airport, one of South Korea's busiest travel hubs, is set to implement a new policy that grants celebrities and public figures access to an exclusive gate. This decision, aimed at addressing overcrowding concerns, comes in response to the large gatherings of fans that often flock to the airport to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars, creating congestion and potential safety risks.

The Incheon International Airport Corporation announced that this measure is meant to reduce inconvenience for other passengers and prevent accidents. “Celebrities attract large crowds, which not only disrupts the flow of the airport but also presents safety concerns,” the corporation stated. To combat this issue, they have requested entertainment agencies to utilise the designated gate for their celebrity clients.
The exclusive gate, set to be implemented on 28 Oct 2024, is not newly constructed but will repurpose existing gates typically used by flight attendants and pilots. Celebrities wishing to use the gate will need to submit an application in advance, ensuring a smoother and more controlled process for both the stars and the airport.
Over the years, fan gatherings at Incheon Airport have led to a number of chaotic incidents. One notable case occurred in July, when actor Byeon Woo-seok’s security team was criticised for their aggressive handling of fans, which included blocking gates, flashing lights at passengers, and conducting unauthorised checks of tickets and passports. These incidents have highlighted the need for better crowd control and security protocols, especially in such a high-traffic environment.
The airport’s new policy has sparked mixed reactions from the public. According to local media, some social media users have welcomed the change, arguing that it will help reduce crowding and improve safety for all travellers. Others, however, have expressed concerns over what they see as preferential treatment for celebrities, questioning whether such a move is fair to the general public.

Despite the controversy, the airport corporation remains firm on the need for this measure, emphasising the importance of maintaining smooth operations and ensuring the safety of all passengers. By introducing the exclusive gate for celebrities, Incheon Airport hopes to strike a balance between managing fan enthusiasm and providing a better experience for other travellers.
As this policy rolls out on 28 Oct 2024, it remains to be seen how effective it will be in mitigating the issues of overcrowding and enhancing safety at South Korea's busiest airport.
