Filipino Brands Celebrate Hidilyn Diaz for Winning the Olympic Gold

On 26 Jul 2021, Filipina weightlifter won the Philippines’ first-ever Olympic gold medal at the women’s 55kg weightlifting category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. By securing this historic victory, she has lifted everyone’s spirits and turned the country’s mood into one of celebration. 

As the Philippines continues to shower with praise and epic prizes, Filipino brands also took this opportunity to offer their congratulations to the 30-year-old athlete. And now, it looks like they’ve struck creative gold.

From Starbucks to IKEA Philippines, Filipino companies are celebrating ’ win by using wordplay and eye-catching visuals in their promotions. Some companies like McDonald’s didn’t even have to use typography and simply relied on their logo’s visual power to deliver their message. Meanwhile, a certain plastic manufacturing company took a playful approach by saying, “Wag na tayong magplastikan” in reference to other brands.

What an Olympic gold medalist wins in prizes 

As of 29 Jul 2021, will receive ₱43.5 million cash and other incentives for bringing home the Olympic gold medal for the Philippines. 

These prizes include ₱10 million from the Philippine government through the Republic Act No. 10699 or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act; ₱10 million pledged by tycoons Ramon Ang and Manny Pangilinan; ₱3 million pledged by Deputy Speaker of the House Mikee Romero; ₱2.5 million from the local government of Zamboanga City; and a house and lot in Tagaytay City, among others.

In honour of ’s historic achievement, AirAsia has granted her a lifetime of free flights to more than 180 destinations within AirAsia’s flight routes. 

Philippine Airlines will also provide her 80,000 miles every year for life — officially making Diaz the first forever flyer of Philippine Airlines.
