This year, Japan's autumn foliage season is expected to arrive a bit later than usual, with peak colours pushed back by more than a week. Due to the lingering summer heat, the transition of leaves from green to gold and red will be delayed. Typically, the best time for momijari starts in mid-October and lasts through early December, but this year’s best views are expected in November and even December, depending on the region.

For travellers eager to catch the first glimpse of fiery red and golden hues, the Hokkaido region in the north is your best bet. Sapporo is forecasted to reach peak red maple leaves by 8 Nov 2024, which is 11 days later than usual. Tokyo and Osaka will follow closely behind, with their famous ginkgo trees hitting their golden peak around 25–26 Nov 2024. If you’re heading to the south, Fukuoka will showcase its autumnal charm by 10 Dec 2024.

Where to Experience the Best of Japan’s Autumn Foliage

Japan offers countless destinations for enjoying the seasonal foliage. Some of the most popular spots include:

  • Shinjuku Gyoen and Yoyogi Park in Tokyo: Both parks offer expansive green spaces that transform into vibrant autumn displays, making them ideal for leisurely strolls and photo ops.

  • Arashiyama and Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto: These iconic spots provide a stunning backdrop of fiery reds and oranges, with historic temples adding to the serene beauty.

  • Osaka Castle and Midosuji Street in Osaka: Osaka’s cityscape comes alive with golden ginkgo trees, especially along the famous Midosuji Street, creating a magical urban autumn experience.
