A powerful earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Thursday, registering a magnitude of 7.1, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The tremor, which occurred at 4.43pm local time, was centred off the coast of Miyazaki prefecture on the island of Kyushu. The earthquake triggered tsunami advisories, with waves reaching up to 50 cm (20 inches) observed in Miyazaki.

Despite the significant quake, initial reports indicate that major damage has not been observed. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi assured the public that there were no immediate abnormalities at nuclear power plants, and the government is actively assessing the situation for potential damage and casualties.
