Travellers planning to use the LRT-1 in Metro Manila this August should be aware of upcoming service disruptions. The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) has announced that the LRT-1 line will be temporarily suspending operations for three weekends in August to prepare for the highly anticipated LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1, which is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The suspension will affect all stations from Fernando Poe Jr. Station to Baclaran Station on the following dates: 17–18 Aug, 24–25 Aug, and Aug 31–Sept 1. This means that commuters will need to explore alternative transportation options on these weekends. LRMC assures that additional information regarding alternate routes and service adjustments will be provided as the work progresses.
While the temporary shutdowns may cause inconvenience, they are part of a significant upgrade that promises long-term benefits for commuters. According to LRMC, the short-term disruption will pave the way for the extended LRT-1 line, which will greatly enhance connectivity between Metro Manila and Cavite.
The LRT-1 Cavite Extension is a major infrastructure project designed to expand the current LRT-1 line by an additional 11.8 kilometres, stretching from Baclaran in Pasay to Bacoor in Cavite. This extension will increase the total number of LRT-1 stations from 20 to 28, making it easier for residents and visitors to travel between these key areas.
Once Phase 1 is complete, five new stations will be operational in Parañaque City:
Redemptorist Station
MIA Station
Asiaworld Station
Ninoy Aquino Station
Dr. Santos Station
The extension is expected to ease traffic congestion and provide a more efficient and convenient mode of transportation for those travelling to and from Cavite. The project is also known as the South Extension Project due to its significant impact on the southern regions of Metro Manila.
Phase 2 of the Cavite Extension will commence once Phase 1 is fully completed. This next phase will add three more stations:
Las Piñas Station
Zapote Station
Niog Station
These additions will further enhance the LRT-1’s reach, connecting more communities and providing better access to key areas in the south.

As Metro Manila continues to grow, projects like the LRT-1 Cavite Extension are crucial in addressing the increasing demand for reliable public transportation. While the temporary closures may cause some inconvenience, the long-term benefits will be well worth the wait for daily commuters and travellers alike.
