The Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Caraga Region is making waves with a major initiative to enhance tourist safety across the Philippines. In a recent announcement, the DOT revealed that General Luna, located on Siargao Island, will soon host a state-of-the-art Philippines tourist first aid facility. This development is part of a broader plan to establish similar facilities in six top tourist destinations nationwide.

This transformative project is the result of a collaborative effort between the DOT and the Department of Health (DOH). A memorandum of agreement was signed recently to bring this vision to life, with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) joining forces to manage the project. The new first aid facility in General Luna will be strategically situated near the famous Cloud 9 surfing spot, offering crucial medical assistance to both locals and visitors.
The initiative isn't limited to Siargao Island alone. The project will also see the establishment of first aid facilities in five other high-traffic tourist destinations: La Union, Boracay, Panglao, Palawan, and Puerto Galera. This expansion aims to ensure that tourists have access to immediate medical support in these popular spots.
The government has allocated over ₱40 million for these facilities, underscoring its commitment to improving tourist safety. The groundbreaking ceremonies, led by Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, are expected to commence later this year, marking the beginning of this significant project.
One of the key benefits of these first aid facilities is the improvement in emergency response capabilities. As tourism continues to grow, especially in more remote areas like Siargao Island, having readily accessible medical support is crucial. This initiative is set to enhance the overall safety of tourists, which in turn is likely to increase their confidence in travelling to these destinations.
In addition to boosting safety, the project is poised to positively impact the global perception of the Philippines as a tourist-friendly country. By addressing one of the major concerns for travellers—safety—the Philippines is reinforcing its position as a leading destination for international visitors.
For tourists, these new first aid facilities mean added peace of mind. Whether surfing the waves in Siargao or enjoying the beaches of Boracay, travellers will benefit from the assurance that help is readily available if needed. This move aligns with global trends where traveller safety is a top priority, promising to make the Philippines an even more attractive destination.
