Launched in partnership with the Office of Senior Citizens’ Affairs (OSCA), this initiative is all about giving seniors a chance to experience the city in a new way. Instead of staying at home, they get to hop on a rolling city tour, visit historic sites, and relive the beauty of Iloilo from a fresh perspective.
The first batch of lucky senior travellers kicked off their adventure on 20 February 2025, with 15 officers from the Federation of Senior Citizens Associations of the Philippines – Iloilo City chapter leading the way. Their half-day tour included stops at some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Jaro Cathedral, also known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Candles, is a historic landmark built in 1874. It houses the miraculous image of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, a rare Marian statue displayed on the balcony. With its grand architecture and deep religious ties, the cathedral remains a must-visit for pilgrims and tourists alike.
Across the street stands the Jaro Belfry, a historic watchtower built in the 1700s. Partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1948, it was later restored as a lasting symbol of Jaro’s resilience and faith.
Molo Mansion | Iloilo City Government Official Facebook Page
Once home to Iloilo’s old aristocracy, Molo Mansion is now a beautifully restored heritage house showcasing the city’s colonial past. It originally belonged to the influential Yusay-Consing family. Today, it serves as a cultural hub with a museum, artisan shop, and café celebrating Ilonggo craftsmanship. Its blend of history and local artistry makes it a must-visit spot.
With its grand staircase, high ceilings, and intricate carvings, the mansion exudes old-world elegance. Seniors on the tour appreciate its preservation, reminiscing about Iloilo’s aristocratic past.

Located in the heart of the Molo district, Molo Plaza is a charming public square known for its old-world elegance. Surrounded by lush gardens, historic structures, and a picturesque fountain, it remains a favourite gathering place. For generations, it has hosted social and cultural activities, making it a vibrant community hub. Its well-preserved beauty continues to draw visitors seeking a peaceful escape.
For seniors on the tour, Molo Plaza brings back fond memories of childhood games and leisurely walks. Today, it offers them a serene space to relax, reflect, and reconnect with Iloilo’s rich heritage.

Molo Church, also known as St. Anne Parish Church, is a symbol of Iloilo’s deep Catholic roots. Built in 1831, it is famously called the “Feminist Church” for its all-female ensemble of saints on the altar. Made entirely of coral stone, its towering Gothic architecture makes it one of the most striking churches in the Visayas.
Beyond its religious significance, Molo Church holds a place in Philippine history—Dr. José Rizal visited in 1896 and admired its beauty. Today, it remains a sacred site and a treasured landmark that continues to inspire devotion.
This programme is more than just sightseeing—it gives seniors something to look forward to. Special Assistant to the Mayor Mathilde Treñas noted that many elderly residents rarely leave their homes. This initiative encourages them to step outside, enjoy fresh air, and reconnect with their city’s past and present.
“Our itinerary focuses on Iloilo’s heritage houses, open spaces, and churches,” Treñas shared, emphasising how the tour blends nostalgia with discovery. Beyond history, the experience boosts mental and emotional well-being, offering excitement, social interaction, and a renewed sense of belonging. It is a reminder that adventure has no age limit.

Iloilo City’s free heritage tours for seniors happen every Thursday, with 20 participants per batch. If you or a loved one would love to join, here’s what you need to do:
Register with OSCA: Head to the Office of Senior Citizens’ Affairs.
Bring your senior citizen’s ID: Proof of residency is required.
Spread the word: Many seniors might not know about this, so let them in on the fun.
OSCA head Eleanor Gregorio encourages everyone to share the news. “Please let more seniors know that we have this activity every Thursday for them,” she urged.
