South Korea’s Snowstorm 2024: What Travellers Should Know

South Korea is embracing its first snow of the season, but the heavy snowfall has brought more than just picturesque winter scenes. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), this November marks the heaviest daily snowfall since records began in 1907, creating challenges for both locals and travelers.

South Korea’s Snowstorm 2024: What Travellers Should Know

On Wednesday, November 27, Seoul experienced a stunning 16.1 centimeters (6.3 inches) of snow during its first snowfall of the year, surpassing the previous record of 9.5 centimeters (3.7 inches) set in 1966. Parts of Yongin city in Seoul saw an even more dramatic accumulation of 47.5 centimeters (18.7 inches) by Thursday morning.

While the snow paints a magical winter wonderland, it has also led to significant disruptions. Incheon International Airport is one of the hardest-hit areas, with passengers facing delays averaging two hours. According to Flightradar24, 31% of flights are delayed, and 16% are canceled. In total, authorities report 142 flight cancellations and the suspension of 76 ferry routes.

Temperatures in Seoul have plummeted to 1°C, with a forecasted drop to -2°C overnight. Weather experts warn of more heavy snowfall in the capital on Friday, November 29, making it essential for visitors to prepare for the cold and potential travel challenges.

How to Handle the Snow

For travelers navigating South Korea during this snowy season, preparation is key. Here are some tips to stay safe and enjoy your trip despite the weather:

  1. Dress for the Cold:
Layer up with thermal wear, a waterproof coat, gloves, a scarf, and insulated boots. These will keep you warm and dry as you explore snowy streets.

  2. Monitor Travel Updates:
Check your flight status regularly and stay informed about local transportation delays or cancellations. Apps like KakaoMap and Naver Map can help you find alternative routes.

  3. Plan Extra Travel Time:
Whether you're heading to the airport or exploring the city, give yourself extra time to account for slower traffic and crowded public transportation.

  4. Stay Safe Outdoors:
Be cautious on icy sidewalks and avoid slippery areas. Carry traction aids for your shoes if you plan to walk extensively.

  5. Embrace the Snowy Charm:
Visit iconic winter spots like Namsan Tower, Bukchon Hanok Village, or nearby ski resorts to enjoy the beauty of South Korea's snowy landscapes.

While South Korea’s record-breaking snowfall may pose some challenges, it also offers travelers a chance to experience the country’s winter magic. Bundle up, stay informed, and make the most of this extraordinary season!
