Cable Cars in Baguio City Might Be the Solution to Beat Heavy Traffic

Futuristic travel is on the horizon for the City of Pines! The Philippines is exploring a revolutionary transportation system: self-driving cable cars in Baguio City! Imagine cruising through the picturesque hills of Camp John Hay suspended in a high-tech cable car. This dream-like scenario might become reality thanks to a new partnership between the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) and Japanese company Zip Infrastructure.

The concept? A self-driving cable car system called Zippar. This innovative technology promises to be a game-changer for urban transportation, particularly in areas struggling with traffic congestion.

Zippar’s unique design allows the capsules to navigate curves and even branch off to different lines, all while being controlled from a central hub. This not only enhances mobility but also promotes eco-friendly solutions for Camp John Hay.

A potential national solution

The excitement surrounding Zippar extends beyond Baguio. Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista sees this technology as a potential solution for congested cities like Metro Manila. He highlights Zippar’s potential to be a “game-changer” and an “ideal green transport model.”

While the concept sounds futuristic, Zippar is no mere pipe dream. Launched in Japan in 2018, the system is currently undergoing real-world testing to assess its effectiveness and practicality. If successful, Zippar could be implemented in various urban centres by 2025, with Baguio potentially becoming the first Philippine city to embrace this innovative transportation solution.

The Philippines’ exploration of cable cars as a solution to traffic woes isn’t entirely new. Since 2018, proposals like the Manila Urban Car Cable Project, a 4.5-kilometer system connecting Marikina and Pasig, have been on the table. While this project awaits government approval, Zippar presents a more advanced and potentially faster solution.

While the verdict is still out on Zippar’s official arrival in Baguio, this feasibility study signifies a significant step towards a more sustainable and efficient transportation future for the popular tourist destination. So, on your next trip to Baguio, keep your eyes peeled — you might just find yourself soaring through the breathtaking scenery in a self-driving cable car!
