In an advisory on 4 Jun 2020, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) reminded travellers not to go to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) if they don’t have confirmed bookings.
Specifically targeted to locally stranded individuals (LSI), one of three domestic passenger categories allowed to fly during the general community quarantine, the advisory came after a group of these individuals went to NAIA without confirmed flights for the day.
Refusing to leave the airport, the LSIs ended up gathering outside the said terminal. They also told the MIAA that they will simply wait until flights are available. Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) staff stationed at the airport, along with MIAA, offered the individuals Malasakit Kits.
“The airport chief said that they were overwhelmed yesterday when the LSIs came in groups,” the post said, referring to MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal. “Inquiries made with the LSIs revealed that they have a leader who told them to proceed to Terminal 2 because there was a flight that would bring them home to various parts of Visayas and Mindanao.”
Under the new NAIA travel guidelines, only travellers who have confirmed bookings may enter the airport facilities. This is to help reduce passenger traffic in observance of social distancing measures against COVID-19.
