Boracay is set to reintroduce itself as a more Muslim-friendly destination this year, with efforts by the Department of Tourism (DOT) to attract more foreign Muslim travellers to the island.
The “Muslim-Friendly Boracay” initiative, launching this September in partnership with the local government of Malay, Aklan, will feature private coves exclusively for Muslim women.

Malay Mayor Floribar Bautista has identified three potential areas for these private coves, according to DOT Undersecretary for Muslim Affairs Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar. The initiative will also include redesigning Boracay’s port to feature a prayer room and ablution area for Muslims.
The DOT is currently accepting letters of intent from Boracay accommodation establishments to be recognized as Muslim-friendly stays. There is also hope that one of Megaworld Hotels and Resorts’ properties on the island will soon have a Halal-certified kitchen following a recent deal with the DOT.
Megaworld’s Newcoast, a 150-hectare mixed-use leisure and resort development in Boracay, houses hotels such as the Belmont and the Savoy, which are expected to participate in the initiative. Additionally, an airline is in talks with the DOT to offer Halal-friendly services, further enhancing the Muslim-friendly travel experience to Boracay.

The “Muslim-Friendly Boracay” initiative not only enhances the island's appeal to Muslim travellers but also reinforces its reputation as a world-class destination that caters to diverse needs and preferences. With private coves, Halal-certified kitchens, and dedicated prayer facilities, Boracay is poised to offer a unique and enriching experience for all its visitors. This development is a testament to the island's continuous evolution and dedication to providing a welcoming environment for everyone.
