Tokyo Disneyland’s Space Mountain Closed Until 2027

For Disney fans and thrill-seekers, Tokyo Disneyland’s Space Mountain has long been a must-ride attraction, known for its high-speed indoor thrills and immersive space-themed experience. However, visitors hoping to hop on this beloved roller coaster will need to adjust their plans — Space Mountain has officially closed for a major renovation and won’t reopen until 2027.

Tokyo Disneyland’s Space Mountain closed for major renovation

The announcement, made by Tokyo Disneyland’s operator, Oriental Land Co., marks the start of a significant transformation for both the ride and its surrounding area, Tomorrowland. The closure, which began on 30 Jul 2024, comes after Space Mountain had operated for over four decades, racking up an impressive 22.6 million kilometres since its debut in 1983. To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of 29 round trips between the Earth and the Moon.

But while it’s sad to see the original ride close, there’s good news on the horizon. The revamped Space Mountain will maintain its core concept as an indoor coaster but will feature enhanced performance and more immersive special effects, promising an even more thrilling and engaging experience when it reopens. According to Oriental Land Co., the updates will create a ride that honours the original while bringing it firmly into the future with cutting-edge technology.

In addition to the ride itself, Tomorrowland, the futuristic area that houses Space Mountain, will also be getting a facelift. The new design for Tomorrowland’s plaza will emphasise the connection between Earth and the universe, reflecting a vision of a future where humans live in harmony with nature. Once the sun sets, the area will transform into a spectacular world of light and sound, creating an immersive environment that complements the revamped Space Mountain.

Major investment for Tokyo Disneyland

The renovation project represents a significant investment by Tokyo Disneyland, with approximately ₱21 billion allocated to the transformation of Space Mountain and Tomorrowland.

For those who can’t wait until 2027 to experience the thrills of Space Mountain, there are still other options available. The ride can be found in four other Disneyland parks worldwide, including Hong Kong Disneyland, where it has been reimagined as Star Wars: HyperSpace Mountain. Although smaller than the original in Tokyo, it still offers a taste of the high-speed, space-themed adventure fans love.

As always, visitors planning a trip to Tokyo Disneyland should ensure they have the correct ticket for the park they wish to visit. Tickets for Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea are sold separately and can be purchased through the official Tokyo Disney Resort website or through third-party platforms like Klook.
