China’s Dalian Jinzhou Bay: The World’s Largest Artificial Island Airport

China is set to claim another engineering marvel with the construction of the world’s largest artificial island airport, the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport. Located off the country’s northeast coast, this ambitious project will span a 20-square-kilometer (7.7-square-mile) man-made island, featuring four runways and a massive 900,000-square-meter (969,000 sq ft) passenger terminal.

China Builds World’s Largest

Designed to handle up to 80 million passengers annually and accommodate 540,000 flights per year, the airport is poised to significantly enhance China’s aviation capacity. The first phase of the project is expected to be operational by 2035, solidifying its position as a key player in global air travel.

Once completed, Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport will surpass Hong Kong International Airport and Japan’s Kansai Airport to become the largest airport built on an artificial island. This monumental project not only represents a leap in engineering but also addresses a critical need for the city of Dalian, which has long been a transport hub due to its strategic location near Japan and South Korea. Dalian’s current airport, Dalian Zhoushuizi International, has already reached its maximum capacity despite undergoing multiple expansions over the years.

The construction of this offshore airport is not without challenges. Engineers face complex geological conditions, high drilling difficulty, and stringent quality demands, all under a tight construction timeline. Li Xiang, the chief engineer of Dalian Airport Construction and Development Co., Ltd., acknowledged these difficulties in a recent interview, emphasizing the effort required to bring this vision to life.

Planning for the airport began in 2003, with site selection and demonstration work spanning several years. Active construction only began recently, reflecting the scale and complexity of the endeavor. A post on Chinese social media platform WeChat from Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport describes the project as “rising slowly from the sea level like the sunrise in the east.”

This new airport aligns with China’s broader ambitions in the aviation sector. The country is on track to overtake the United States as the world’s largest air travel market and aims to build 450 airports by 2035 to meet soaring demand. In 2019, Beijing Daxing International Airport—dubbed “starfish” for its unique design—opened to much acclaim, marking a milestone in China’s aviation development.

With Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport, China’s vision for the future of air travel continues to soar, blending cutting-edge engineering with strategic foresight.
